The adoption of agricultural mechanization in India is increasing continuously. Amidst growing concerns about man power availability and shrinking profitability of agriculture as enterprise, the need has been felt for appropriate, affordable and energy efficient equipment and technology for cost effective production and processing of crops focused at increased yield, reduced cost of cultivation, prevention of losses and value addition through location specific management practices.

Soil and water are the two basic natural resources that sustain life on the Earth. The soil, plant and water interactions are pivotal to enhance productivity to meet the challenge of food security. The soil and water engineers (SWE) play an important role in understanding and quantifying these interactions and to present solutions to optimize the performance. The knowledge of these interactions and nature with the SWE makes them experts in the field of irrigation water management, watershed management, water resources management, climate change, climate control production systems, hydrology and its modelling etc.
The food processing and dairy sector is passing through rapid transformation and the agricultural engineers of the country have a great responsibility to be the drivers of the change. When the country focuses on nutritional security, the role of Agricultural Engineers in food processing sector becomes utmost important. The food processing industry is an important part of the Indian economy and accounts for about 10% of India’s GDP and employs around 15 million people.
Power is one of the most critical components for the economic growth and welfare of nations.India has tremendous energy needs and an increasing difficulty in meeting those needs through traditional means of power generation. Renewable Energy Sources viz; Solar, Wind, Biomass, Ocean, Micro hydro has the potential and advantage of decentralized distribution of energy, and thereby empowering people at the grass roots level.Renewable energy has the potential to re-energize India’s economy by creating millions of new jobs, allowing the country to achieve energy independence, reduce its trade deficits and propel it forward as a “Green Nation.”
