Title ENERGY ECONOMICS OF SUGARCANE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES IN NORTHERN INDIA
Author Name B.S. Pathak
Abstract

Efficient processing of sugar cane in the 'Gur' and 'Khandsari' units in northern India leads to considerable Joss of sugar and excess consumption of commercial energy. The paper compares the sugar balance and energy requirements of different sugarcane processing technologies in northern India. It is reported that the loss of sugar exceeds 1.5 million tonnes per year and commercial energy consumption to produce a tonne of raw sugar in the Khandsari plant is much higher compared to the commercial energy required to produce an equal amount of refined sugar. Steps to improve the commercial energy efficiency of sugarcane processing technologies have been suggested.
