As per the latest report, our country's population has touched a new height of 680 millions in 1981. In order to solve the food problems of such large population, we have to put every hectare of land under cultivation. In our country, considerable area remains barren due to water logging and salinity. It is reported that salt affected soils are spread in an area of 7.0 million hectares out of which nearly 2.1 million hectares are encountered in coastal areas. In this paper, characteristics, occurrence. and distribution of coastal saline land affecting its reclamation and the measures taken - in this regard are discussed.
