This paper makes an attempt to define the role which engineering systems for mechanized dairy farming can play to meet the increasing demand of milk in India. A distinction between the traditional dairy farming systems and mechanized dairy farming systems has been made on the basis of -the equipment available in both types of dairy units. Suitable animal housing systems and milk extraction engineering systems depending upon the range of herd size have been suggested for Indian conditions. In addition to l11is, need for introducing other engineering systems, such as animal environmental engineering, fodder harvesting, handling and storage engineering, animal feeding, milk chilling and transportation engineering and manure removal systems ha., also been highlighted in terms of their objectives of maximizing the animals' productivity consistent with the safe-guarding of profitability
